Topic: From Cambodia to Your Case File: The Global Scam Industry and the Fight Back

Erin West is the founder of Operation Shamrock, a global nonprofit uniting law enforcement, industry, and everyday citizens to disrupt the world’s fastest-growing form of transnational organized crime: pig butchering scams.
After 26 years as a prosecutor—including eight on the REACT High-Tech Task Force where she became known for her relentless pursuit of crypto criminals—Erin now leads a cross-border fight to expose the scam economy, mobilize action, and protect both victims and the trafficked workers forced to run these schemes.

She is also the host of Stolen, a podcast that brings listeners inside the darkest corners of the scamdemic, where love is weaponized, billions are laundered, and real people pay the price. A sought-after speaker and educator, Erin continues to equip and inspire audiences around the world to use their skills, platforms, and tools to fight back.

Date: Monday, May 11, 2026

Time: 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EST

Delivery Method: Group Internet-Based

CPE Credits: Up to 1 credit hour (must participate for a minimum of 50 minutes)

Description: Transnational scam operations now rival the global drug trade in revenue and far exceed it in scale of human exploitation. For CFEs, the convergence of cyber fraud, money laundering, and human trafficking creates both a detection challenge and a professional responsibility. This session maps the growth and gravity of the scamdemic, unpacks the financial and technological infrastructure propping it up, and lays out specific, practitioner-level actions CFEs can take inside their institutions, in their communities, and across cross-sector coalitions.

Program Level: Basic

Prerequisites Required: None Required

Advanced Preparation: Non-Required

Field of Study: Specialized Knowledge

Learning Objectives:

After this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the structure and scale of transnational scam compounds, including the intersection of cyber fraud, human trafficking, and cross-border money laundering
  • Identify key typologies such as “pig butchering” and related investment scams across financial data, enterprise fraud cases, and victim reports
  • Apply practical detection, reporting, and victim-response strategies, including the use of IC3, coordination with law enforcement, and introductory crypto-tracing tools
  • Assess how CFEs can contribute to cross-sector partnerships and policy efforts to disrupt the global scam economy

Group Internet-Based Attendance Policy:

Although the ACFE New Jersey 9, Inc. acknowledges that it is the participant’s responsibility to report the appropriate number of credits earned, it consistently maintains a process to monitor individual attendance at group programs to guarantee the correct allocation of CPE credits. The organization recognizes that a participant’s self-certification of attendance alone is insufficient. When conducting group internet-based programs, three polling questions per CPE credit are implemented to establish a real-time monitoring mechanism that verifies participant engagement during the course. These three polling questions per CPE credit are administered at sufficiently frequent intervals and are unpredictable, ensuring that attendees remain engaged throughout the session. Attendee participation is tracked via SLIDO, an application that facilitates real-time engagement through live polls, Q&As, and quizzes. It is the responsibility of attendees to accurately report CPE credits based on their actual time attending the sessions. While the ACFE New Jersey 9, Inc. recognizes that it is the participant’s responsibility to report the appropriate number of credits earned, the ACFE New Jersey 9, Inc. continually maintains a process to monitor individual attendance at group programs to ensure the correct number of CPE credits are assigned.
