Topic: The Psychology Behind Today's Biggest Scams

Presenters: Peter Warmka

Date: Thursday, November 12, 2026

Time: 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm

Delivery Method: Group Internet-Based

CPE Credits: Up to 1 credit hour

Description: Today’s scams are more sophisticated, psychologically driven, and technologically enabled than ever before. Among the most damaging are pig-butchering schemes—complex fraud operations that combine relationship building, social engineering, fraudulent investment opportunities, and organized international crime. Victims include retirees, professionals, business owners, and even experienced financial executives.

In this engaging presentation, former CIA intelligence officer and best-selling author Peter Warmka examines these crimes through the lens of human behavior and manipulation. Drawing upon real-world cases—including that of a bank CEO manipulated into transferring millions of dollars to fraudsters—Warmka reveals how criminals establish trust, identify vulnerabilities, exploit emotions, and gradually influence victims into making decisions they would ordinarily recognize as dangerous.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the psychology behind successful scams, the warning signs that often appear during the manipulation process, and why intelligence and professional experience alone do not make someone immune to sophisticated human hacking.

Recognize Why Older Adults Are Particularly Vulnerable: Examine the factors that can increase seniors’ susceptibility to sophisticated scams, including social isolation, loneliness, financial resources, and unfamiliarity with emerging technologies, while recognizing that individuals of all ages and backgrounds can become victims.

      3. Identify Warning Signs and Apply Preventive Strategies: Recognize the red flags associated with pig-butchering schemes and other sophisticated frauds, and apply practical countermeasures to protect themselves, their families, and others from financial exploitation.

Group Internet-Based Attendance Policy:

Although the ACFE New Jersey 9, Inc. acknowledges that it is the participant’s responsibility to report the appropriate number of credits earned, it consistently maintains a process to monitor individual attendance at group programs to guarantee the correct allocation of CPE credits. The organization recognizes that a participant’s self-certification of attendance alone is insufficient. When conducting group internet-based programs, three polling questions per CPE credit are implemented to establish a real-time monitoring mechanism that verifies participant engagement during the course. These three polling questions per CPE credit are administered at sufficiently frequent intervals and are unpredictable, ensuring that attendees remain engaged throughout the session. Attendee participation is tracked via SLIDO, an application that facilitates real-time engagement through live polls, Q&As, and quizzes. It is the responsibility of attendees to accurately report CPE credits based on their actual time attending the sessions. While the ACFE New Jersey 9, Inc. recognizes that it is the participant’s responsibility to report the appropriate number of credits earned, the ACFE New Jersey 9, Inc. continually maintains a process to monitor individual attendance at group programs to ensure the correct number of CPE credits are assigned. When offering group internet-based programs, we implement three polling questions per CPE credit to ensure a real-time monitoring mechanism that verifies attendees are participating during the course. The three polling questions per CPE credit are at a sufficient frequency and lack predictability to ensure the attendees have been engaged throughout the course. The attendee’s completed interactivity is tracked via SLIDO, an application that ensures real-time engagement with participants with live polls, Q&As, and quizzes. It is the attendees' responsibility to accurately report CPE based on actual time attending conference sessions.

After the program, you will receive a short survey asking you to evaluate the programs. The CPE certificate is generated upon completion of the survey and may be printed or saved as a PDF.
